Bulindi Chimps - "Jemima’s Wild Date in the Swamp” (March 2014)

Jemima feeding on ripe Phoenix palm fruits. Earlier this week a new study was published on the Bulindi chimps’ use of agricultural crops. While crop-raiding is a common activity, we much prefer seeing the chimps eating natural foods in the forest. This clip shows young Jemima enjoying a meal of wild dates. Phoenix date palms are common in swamps at Bulindi, and during the fruiting season the chimps move into the swamp to feed on the sweet red fruits. When they do, it’s hard for us to follow because of all the water. In fact, the swamps are about the only place left where the chimps can almost guarantee they won’t run into people!
